Vegan Fish and Chips

Vegan Fried Fish

 

Ingredients:

 

-1 package Tofu

-4 Nori Sheets

-2 cups All-Purpose Flour

-2 tablespoons Corn Starch

-1 1/2 cups Beer of Choice (or Sparkling Water)

-1/2 cup Water

The Following Seasonings to Taste:

-Old Bay Seasoning

-Black Pepper

-Salt

-Garlic Powder

-Onion Powder

Oil for frying

 

Directions:

 

  1. Freeze the package of tofu, then thaw. Repeat this step if you want a particularly dense tofu

  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, corn starch, beer, and seasonings. Add additional water if the batter is too thick. It should be the consistency of pancake batter

  3. Slice the tofu into 1/4 inch slices. Season liberally

  4. Slice the nori sheets in half (or the same width as the tofu slices). Place a slice of tofu at the bottom of the nori sheet on the rough side. Roll and wrap the nori sheet around the tofu once. Then, place another slice of tofu on top of the original slice. Continue rolling the two slices of tofu in the nori to the end of the sheet. Use tooth picks to secure

  5. Heat about two inches of oil in a large pot on medium heat. Dip the tofu into the batter and gently shake off the excess. Fry until golden brown. Remove the toothpicks before serving. 

 

 

Vegan Chips

 

-1 medium Idaho Potato

-Oil for frying

-Water for boiling

-Salt to Taste

 

Directions

 

  1. Bring a medium sauce pan to a boil

  2. Peel the potato. Cut the potato into the fry shape of your choice. I cut a quarter inch slice off one side of the potato lengthwise, creating a flat side. I then cut quarter inch slices lengthwise. Then I cut these slices lengthwise into three pieces If you can, try to keep the fry widths consistent

  3. Add the potatoes to the water and boil for 2-3 minutes, being careful not to over cook. Remove the potatoes from the water and set aside

  4. Heat your oil on medium-high heat. Add the potatoes and fry for 4-6 minutes

  5. Remove the fries, when they are no longer translucent, from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate 

  6. Raise the heat of the oil from medium-high to high and return the fries to the oil. Fry until golden brown

  7. Season with salt to taste.

 

 

Tartar Sauce

 

Ingredients:

 

-4 tablespoons Vegan Mayonnaise

-1 teaspoon Lemon Juice

-1 teaspoon Dijon Mustard

-2 tablespoons Sweet Relish (or diced pickles)

-1 tablespoon Fresh Dill, chopped

The Following Seasonings to Taste:

-Salt

-Pepper

-Garlic Powder

 

Directions:

 

  1. Place all of the ingredients in bowl and stir well to combine.
