A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned that I went to Detroit for the SphinxConnect conference. This is always one of the highlights of my year. Being Black in the field of classical music can feel isolating. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of Black people doing classical music; you realize this when you attend conferences like Sphinx. The isolation comes from us being so spread out across the map. But attending Sphinx always gives me the burst of energy and encouragement to head back to my personal networks, inspired and ready to do better work.
This year was also super exciting because my friend Dalanie and I did our first live show for our podcast “Classically Black Podcast”. It was exhilarating, terrifying, and weird at the same time. Exhilarating because I can’t believe how well this podcast is doing and I’m happy to be sharing it with those who support us and love the work we’re doing. It’s terrifying because it’s hard to be creative in front of other people. Here you are, presenting something that you are truly passionate about and have put a lot of energy into. You want it to be received well. And it’s weird because we normally record alone. Having a live audience react to what we were saying and laughing at our jokes took a little getting used to.
Classically Black Podcast is a podcast that talks about classical music and being Black in the profession but it’s not only for classical musicians.
