Last weekend I had the opportunity to travel Detroit, Michigan for the SphinxConnect Conference. Sphinx started out as a violin concerto competition (meaning violinists would learn a piece of music and play for a panel of judges) for Black and Latinx musicians. Today, over twenty years later, Sphinx has blossomed into a huge organization that helps to serve Black and Latinx classical musicians in every facet of classical music. From arts administration and teaching, to entrepreneurship and philanthropy, Sphinx has something for everyone and is determined to change the face of classical music. Anyway, I’ll speak more about Sphinx and how I got on in Detroit in another post. But I today, I have to share with you the terrifying experience I had when returning back to Rochester.
I fly a lot. And I am fortunate to have a family member that helps makes this possible. Playing the viola has taken me parts of the world that I could have only dreamed about. I am grateful that I usually have a sure fired way to get to a destination and make it work. I say all of this to say: I cannot truly afford to have a fear of flying. And in general, I do not. Even in the most turbulent situations, I am rest assured that everything is going to be okay. Turbulence is normal and it is virtually impossible for a plane to crash as a result of it.
