If you know me, you know that I cannot take a compliment. Well, it depends on what I am being complimented on. But most of the time, it is difficult to take one. And it’s weird because as humans, we like to be affirmed in what we do. The degree to which depends on the individual but in general, we like to know we are doing well. But sometimes, it is hard to get this affirmation and in my case, all the more difficult when I don’t feel like I deserve it.
There are some things I love to hear I did well on. When I make a vegan dish, especially for my family and friends who are not vegan, I love to hear about how good it is, how much it slaps, and how they can’t even tell it’s vegan. A great example of this was my mac and cheese off that I had with my cousin over the Christmas holiday. My vegan mac and cheese won by a landslide. I felt this was a victory for vegans everywhere.
Another thing I don’t mind taking compliments on is doing hair. I take great pride in being able to do my own hair. It is a skill that I practiced a lot in middle and high school. From the moment Desiree taught me how to cornrow in Mr. Derring’s 6th grade math class, I spent so much time thereafter perfecting my skill. I would practice on anything or anyone I could get my hands on. Now several years later, I am able to do almost anything to my hair and am proud of that.
