I don’t mind traveling by myself. I’m sure I said this before. And I almost can’t mind because most places I go aren’t conducive for a party of two. For example, when I go take an audition, I honestly prefer to be alone. It helps me get in the zone without getting distracted. I do, however, realize that traveling alone sometimes makes me a target. This is especially true when I go abroad. Luckily for me, nothing terrible has ever happened and my fearless “God’s Got Me” flex will continue to encourage me to see the rest of the world. I do want to tell you about this bizarre interaction I had while I was in Berlin and how I believe the devil sent one of his strongest soldiers to rattle my nerves.
At 9:00 AM on September 21, I arrived in Berlin utterly proud of myself because I didn’t feel like I was dying from jet lag (my unwavering dedication to throw some jumbo passion twists in my hair, paired with the most thorough last minute international packing I have ever done, caused me to skip sleep and make it to the airport with just enough time to catch my first flight) as I slept the entire flight. I was excited to be in Berlin because it was my first time in Germany. I was also overwhelmed because I knew I would not be able to even scratch the surface of things to see in Berlin. As I have mentioned before, I was heading to the International Viola Congress in Poznań, Poland but thought it would be nice to fly into Berlin and take the train into Poland the next day. Being the classical music nerd that I am, I resolved that I just had to see the Berlin Philharmoniker play that night. What was even better? They were playing one of my all time favorite symphonies: Sibelius 1! The universe really showed out for me on this one! Side note, if you have never heard this symphony, I encourage you to take a listen; even if you skip around.
