Vegan Travel Tips Part 2: In Transit

Last week I gave you some of my favorite tips for preparing for travel as a vegan. This week, as promised, I wanted to share some of my ideas for the day of travel and while at your destination. Let’s get into it!

1.Eat Before You Leave

Depending on the time of day you are traveling, this might be easier said than done. For example, you might not like eating really early in the morning. While this may be true, this is still one of my favorite tips. Since becoming vegan, I have become more of a breakfast person. Before, I would always skip breakfast and look forward to lunch, which at the time was a more exciting meal. Now, I am always down for a satisfying vegan breakfast. The problem with this is a delicious vegan breakfast is not always easy to find at the airport. Actually it’s impossible. The answer to this is simple: eat before you leave. One thing that I enjoy doing is hitting up my favorite vegan spot in town, getting a breakfast burrito or sandwich, and bringing it with me to the airport. If it is too early to do this, make a wrap or sandwich instead.

I think there is a myth circling around that you cannot bring food through security. In fact, when standing in line for security at LAX, I overheard the couple behind me bickering about what they were going to do with the leftovers they had. One thing to keep in mind here is that security will check your food depending on how it’s packaged. One time before heading home to Chicago, I had time to stop at my local supermarket and grab my all-time favorite tofu breakfast sandwich. When I got to the airport and my bag was flagged, I politely asked the TSA agent if I could unwrap my sandwich for him. I am a lowkey germaphobe and the thought of his dirty gloves touching my food made me freak out. But the pro-tip I learned here and would like to share is that you should not wrap your food in aluminum foil unless you have time to be stopped. The machines cannot see through foil and you will certainly be searched...Read the rest HERE!
